3 Key Learnings
The sports community & the impact of collectivism:
The unity that can occur in society via sports is amazing, evident with recent football affairs around the idea of a super league with football teams such as Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City & Co, all deciding to join until fans pushed back and voiced their opinion of the matter. However, the question at hand is many football fans were quick to speak out and voice their opinion in this sense but not when black footballers are racially abused both online and on the field. An important question is why do the same fans protesting the creation of a super league not protest to protect players within their team with racism occurs in the game?
Our National Health Service (NHS) is a treasure to our country and shouldn’t be taken for granted:
Doctors, nurses, cleaners & the many other roles within the sector have carried the UK throughout the pandemic. The vaccine rollout from those involved has been one of the best around the world, and we have the commend our healthcare workers for the excellent job they have done given the circumstances. They may not be the most attractive roles, but they are integral to our society.
Celebrating Ramadan & why it’s important for the Muslim population:
Over the course of April & May, Muslims around the world have been celebrating the period of Ramadan. This means that from the 12th April - 12th May, those who are fit and healthy to do so have been fasting and only eating after sunset, breaking their fast with a meal called ‘iftar’ and then later eating again before fasting which is a period called ‘Suhoor’. It’s a time of spiritual reflection, self-improvement & allows for Muslims to practise discipline, sacrifice and self control. Acts of generosity and compulsory charity knows as ‘zakat’ are required. It’s a key month for the Muslim population and an important part of the religion.
Editors Pick
This months pick “What’s wrong with my blackness” comes from guest blogger Bolu Bello, who touches on her experiences as the only black child in her area and transitioning to university where she was predominately around black people and her ‘blackness’ was often questioned. It’s a great read, and one we think you should all check out.
RTB Recommendations
Our podcast of the month is Decode, hosted by Kano Chingonyi. This podcast is dedicated to dissecting Dave’s album Psychodrama, which touches on the deepest events in the artist’s life. The host brought us back to English class when we used to analyse poems line by line. Kano Chingonyi gave even more flavour to the award winning album by exploring topics such as Negritude, social injustice and pride which are all messages covered in the album. The podcast can be found on Spotify and we cannot recommend it enough!
